I first got to know about elevation training masks in an episode of ER on Discovery Health. The man who used it happened to have ended up in the ER with a collapsed lung, and that made me want to know more about this weird looking device.

First of all, what is an elevation mask? This is a device that resembles a gas mask. It is used by athletes to simulate training in a high altitude area. It reduces the amount of airflow the athlete breathes during training subsequently creating relative hypoxia. This forces the diaphragm and other accessory muscles of respiration to work hard to compensate for the reduced availability of oxygen in the body.

According to a new small study, patients who take morphine pills for lower back pain may experience changes in the volume of the brain’s gray matter in as little as a month.

The study indicates that their gray matter volume declined as much as 3 percent in regions of the brain thought to regulate emotions, cravings and responses to pain and volume increases in areas believed to be responsible for learning, memory and executive function. No changes occurred with the placebo.
