Dentist Periodontist
Periodontists specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal diseases, which can affect the gums (gingiva), bones, and/or ligaments that support and surround the teeth. One of most common diseases is gingivitis, which affects the gums and is characterized by swollen or tender gums that tend to bleed easily. Periodontists can help patients treat and reverse the progression of gingivitis with proper cleaning and oral care. However, if left unchecked, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, which can eventually result in tooth loss.
In addition to treating and managing periodontal diseases, periodontists are frequently called upon to perform surgery, from correcting a “gummy smile” or receding gums to preparing for the placement of dental implants.
This specialization requires further education beyond the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Periodontists typically complete three to seven years of advanced training in an accredited periodontology residency program, after which they are eligible to become certified by the American Board of Periodontology.
