An oral pathologist is a dentist specializing in the diagnosis and management of diseases that impact the oral and maxillofacial regions. This includes the teeth, jaws, salivary glands, oral soft tissues, mucous membranes and other structures (such as lips and cheeks). Because the field of oral pathology typically focuses on studying and identifying oral and maxillofacial diseases, oral pathologists may or may not provide treatment. In cases where they do not perform the required procedure, they will typically refer patients to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
