Dentist Endodontist

An endodontist is a dentist specializing in the treatment of dental pulp and surrounding tissue, typically through a procedure known as a root canal. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and living tissue, which provides nutrients to the tooth. When the pulp becomes diseased or injured, root canal therapy is performed to protect the surrounding tooth. The procedure involves removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning the pulp chamber and canals, filling the disinfected passages (usually with a material known as gutta-percha) and restoring the surface of the tooth, typically with a porcelain or metal dental crown.

Some general dentists routinely perform simple root canals. However, more complex procedures – such as a root canal on a molar with multiple canals – will often require the specialized skills of an endodontist.
