About me:
I am passionate about natural health and natural nutrition. When I found out that I was pregnant with my daughter, I became acutely aware of how everything that I came in contact with directly affected her. Maternal instinct kicked in and I was suddenly scrutinizing all of the potential dangers in my environment. Of course I was worried about obvious physical dangers like falls or accidents, but I also worried about the less obvious dangers such as the possible toxins in cleaning products and body care products. I also became conscious of the nutritional value of what I was eating. Suddenly it made all the difference in the world if I chose an apple over a candy bar. Of course as a human, and a pregnant human at that, I still had my sugar cravings. But the point is that I began to make small choices which led to bigger choices. These choices led to changes in my eating habits.
I had always had an interest in helping people and that led me to nursing school. However, I found that in my heart, I knew there was more to health than what I was learning. I wanted to help people, but I wanted to help them to heal themselves naturally. I had come to the realization that what we eat affects us and our health profoundly, and I was determined to share that with others. That led me to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
I am currently completing my training to be a holistic health counselor. I became pre-certified February 15, 2010, and I will graduate fully certified by the school and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners in September 2010.
The Institute of Integrative Nutrition is the only nutrition school that teaches over 100 different dietary theories. I’ve learned about everything from the ancient concepts such as Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, to the modern theories such as the USDA food pyramid, the Zone diet, and the Atkins diet. The reason why the school teaches so many different concepts is because of the idea of bio-individuality. It’s basically a fancy way of saying that everyone is different. Due to your age, gender, ancestry, genetics, body type and health concerns, your needs are going to be completely unique to you. One diet or one type of food may work very well for somebody you know, but may be disastrous for you. That’s the reason there are so many types of diets out there, because no one diet is right for everyone.
What is a holistic health counselor?
As a holistic health counselor, I help my clients to distinguish between secondary food, which is the food found on our plates, and primary food, which are the things beyond nutrition that nourish us on a deep and essential level. I act as a guide to assist my clients in discovering the right foods for their body. Different foods react differently within our bodies for different people. In addition to that, many people don’t feel like they have the time or the knowledge to prepare healthy meals. Cooking can seem scary, but it doesn’t have to be. I’ll help you to feel confident in choosing and preparing healthy meals which are easy to make and taste great! Your health and the health of your loved ones will benefit tremendously.
I also encourage my clients to determine the non-food things that feed them. There are a few specific areas that we consider primary food, such as exercise, relationships, career and spirituality. Exercise is difficult for some people because it seems too hard or too time consuming. I help my clients to find manageable ways to work exercise into their lives in a way that fits their schedules and their needs.
Our relationships feed our hearts and souls. We have relationships with our spouses, partners, children, parents, family, friends and coworkers. We even have a relationship with ourselves. If any of these relationships are out of balance, it can cause other areas in our lives to become imbalanced as well. If your relationship is causing you stress, then no amount of broccoli is going to heal that. The same goes for our career. We spend so many hours of our day, our week and our life working. If we have a job that makes us unhappy, how is that unhappiness going to affect the rest of our life? It may cause strain in our relationships or it may cause us to overeat for example.
Some of you may balk at the idea that spirituality is considered a primary food, but let me explain. For one person, being spiritual may mean going to church every Sunday. For another person, that may mean regular meditation. It doesn’t matter what or who you believe in, but those beliefs make up the core of who you are and how you experience life. Some people choose to return to the religion of their childhood, some people decide to explore a new type of religion that interests them, some people take up journaling. Do you see my point? Spirituality is just something that you can return to at the end of the day to center yourself and gain strength. As a health counselor, I do not subscribe to or push any one particular set of beliefs. I believe that everyone has the right and the responsibility to find their own truth.
I look at health holistically – as a whole. Health is a many layered thing, and our primary foods help us to achieve well being on more of those levels than just nutrition alone. I aim to help my clients discover what complete and total well being means for them. I am here to act as a support person for my clients. I create a nourishing and encouraging environment to help them to heal themselves. When it comes to health, many people know what to do and maybe even how to do it, but they have a hard time integrating that into their lives. Allow me be that bridge! I will assist you in making those concepts a reality.
What does the program look like?
Much of the program is driven by the client because every single client of mine is an individual first and foremost. No two programs are the same. When we meet, we will discuss your unique health situation, your goals and your concerns. Then, we will work on a customized, step by step plan which will help you to integrate health into your life in an easy, enjoyable and manageable way. We will work at a pace that is for you. We will meet for an hour twice a month for six months. We meet for an hour because I think it’s important to have that time to address everything that we need to discuss. When you visit a doctor, after waiting for thirty minutes to see them, they are in and out as soon as possible. This isn’t the case at Vibrant Health. Here, you have a voice and not only do I encourage you to use it, but I give you the time to use it. We will meet every other week because that gives you the time to take action on the things we talked about. At each session I will give you no more than three wellness recommendations and having that time in between sessions gives you the time you need to really focus on those steps. My program is six months long, which may seem like a long time but health takes time! During our six months together I will be completely committed to your health. We will get to know each other and have the opportunity to create a deep connection. In addition to that, six months has been shown to be the amount of time that it takes to make truly well formed habits. During our time together, I will teach you the skills that you need for a lifetime of health.
Our sessions can be conducted in person or over the phone, which allows you the convenience and flexibility you need to fit health into your schedule. At each of our sessions you will receive special giveaways such as food samples, body products, handouts, articles, cds, dvds and books which will act as tools to enhance the changes that you are making. In addition to our sessions, I offer a monthly newsletter and monthly events such as health seminars and cooking classes. As a client, you will be able to attend these events free of charge, and you will be given an extra invitation so that you able to share the gift of health with a friend.
Many clients report that they feel a greater sense of overall happiness and satisfaction with life. Many also experience an improvement in their total health as well as weight loss, reduced stress, improved energy, improved sleep, improved relationships, improved eating habits, improved mood and improved digestion.
I am currently offering a free, one hour health consultation to everyone on Facebook. It’s completely confidential and there is no obligation. It will just be an opportunity for us to discuss your health concerns and your goals for wellness.
