With 12 of the 33 members voted to withdraw Avandia from the market, and 20 voted to let the drug remain on the market with enhanced restrictions and rigorous black box warning labels, it shows that Avandia’s manufacturer, Glaxo Smith Kline, did not provide enough research to vote either way.
In light of that, the questions is did Glaxo Smith Kline intentionally provide ambiguous research data to confuse the 33 members and hence increase its chance of getting enough votes? And should Avandia be taking off the market by the FDA regardless of the recommendations of the 33 members?
However, the panel found that Avandia does increase the risk of heart problems compared to other diabetes medications.
