Should Obama Consider Reconciliation For Health Care Reform?
With the end of the televised Obama health care summit with no resolution of the gulf between Republicans and Democrats, it seems to me that the only three choices are to:
- Dump the current Senate version of the health care reform bill and start over as the Republicans demand.
- Dump the health care reform bill entirely.
- Go forward with the parliamentary procedure called reconciliation.
President Obama should go forward with the health care reform bill and use reconciliation since it has been used 22 times since 1980 and Republicans have used it 16 of those 22 times for over 70 percent of the time.
Wikipedia defines reconciliation as “a legislative process in the United States Senate intended to allow consideration of a contentious budget bill without the threat of filibuster. Introduced in 1974, reconciliation limits debate and amendment, and therefore favors the majority party.”
It is time to do what the people want, and not let a small minority hold the country hostage. So Republicans should get on board or get left behind in the train station. History will tell who did the right thing…Stay tuned for the political drama that is about to unfold.
