A Hawaiian newspaper reported today that former New England Patriots fullback and hard-nosed special teams star Mosi Tatupu has died.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports Tatupu, a former pro bowler, considered one of the greatest athletes in the history of Hawaii, was 54 when he died Tuesday at a hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

Tatupu spent the majority of his 14-year NFL career with the New England Patriots. He rushed for 2,415 yards and 18 touchdowns over his career. The American Samoa native played his final pro season with the Rams in 1991. His son, Lofa Tatupu, is a linebacker with the Seattle Seahawks.

Tatupu suffered from high blood pressure, the paper reports, and his ex-wife told his friend of Tatupu’s death. High blood pressure or hypertension, is the second-leading cause of death in the United States. High blood pressure can be easily prevented through diet, exercise and drugs.
