With Bryant Gumbel’s recent revelation that he had surgery to remove a tumor near his lung, and even though he stresses that he had malignant tumor next to the lung and not lung cancer, one thing we know is that he smokes. Tobacco he says and not cigarettes. But do we really know if he smokes cigarettes or not? My answer is that he probably does, even though it may be occasionally.

According to the America Cancer Society, lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. More people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Furthermore, the National Cancer Institute adds that cigarette smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke cause an estimated average of 438,000 premature deaths each year in the United States. Of these premature deaths, about 40 percent are from cancer, 35 percent are from heart disease and stroke, and 25 percent are from lung disease. This begs me to say that Bryant Gumbel’s tumor near his lung may have been caused by his tobacco use.
