With the recent announcement that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the basketball legend has chronic myelogenous leukemia, I hope more awareness would be brought to blood cancers and disorders. One of those myeloproliferative disorders is polycythemia vera which currently has no cure.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), also called chronic myeloid leukemia and chronic granulocytic leukemia, is an uncommon type of cancer of the blood cells. The National Cancer Institute estimates that roughly 4,800 people are diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia each year.

Kareem, you are always in my prayers. I’ve followed you throughout the years, and, have known that you are a very special person. Your intelligence, motivation, and dedication, have certainly played a big role in my life. In fact, I wrote a song just for you on your birthday in 1985, got the copyright, and, never had the opportunity to share it with you. I think you are the most awesome person that was born in 1947, other than “me” of course!

I had hoped to meet you one day, however, time has passed on so quickly that any hopes that I’ve had, probably won’t happen now, due to our lifestyles being so different.

I teach special education in a small Texas town, and, in my teachings, I often speak about you, your past, and, present. The message is, “be the best of whatever you are, and don’t ever let obstacles stand in your way”. I do sincerely hope that I’m on the right road to being a great teacher, as yourself. You see, I’m focused on the fact that you had your basketball career, and, now, faced with your illness, you’re still striving to be the best that you can be. Please understand this, you were put here for a reason, no, I truly believe, several reasons, and, presently, you’re fulfilling just another obligation that was planned for you. You are the most complete person that I know about. You are human, but there’s something from deep within you that radiates a total spiritual being!

I’ve known, or, felt, for years that our spirits have mingled somewhere in this universe. I truly understand your spiritual nature and would love to explore, in depth with you regarding the ultimate fulfillment of that personal satisfaction when you absolutely know the truth and can experience complete spiritual freedom.

I do hope that you will have time to personally read this mail and know that my prayers will always be with you and yours. Thanks for being the role model that you are!
