Healthcare Reform Types of Public Option
The public option, a government sponsored or controlled health insurance plan that competes with private insurance companies has taken another twist, and there are different types of public option been considered versus the Baucus plan introduced earlier this month in the Senate. Some include:
- Robust Public Option – More liberal and similar to Medicare
- Level Playing Field Public Option – Less liberal and government or states can negotiate with insurance companies.
- Level Playing Field with State Opt-Out Public Option – Government or states can negotiate with insurance companies for better rates, and states have the option to opt-out. For example, New York can adopt the public option, and say Alabama could opt-out.
