Tim Wise, one of the most respected antiracist writers and educators in the U.S., recently noted that the healthcare debate turned Obama bashing, may not be about healthcare at all. He noted that a lady whose incoming childbirth will cost her roughly $18,000 out-of-pocket with her current health insurance company, but she still opposes a public option which in all likelihood may costs her a few thousand dollars.

That makes me think that Tim Wise may have a point here. It seems counter-intuitive to pay more, and my conclusion is that some people will rather go into debt and suffer than use sound economic reasoning. Ideology seems to be taking the place of sound economic and rational reasoning. I guess when she goes bankrupt because of medical bills she will wish that she had supported President Obama’s public option in the healthcare reform. Instead people are listening to nonsensical people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh.
