Watchman – New Stroke-Blocking Device

Watchman Device
According to the AP, Watchman, an experimental device that could help in preventing strokes, is the first to try to permanently fix atrial fibrillation, a heartbeat problem afflicting more than 2 million Americans. During atrial fibrillation, the heart’s two small upper chambers (the atria) quiver instead of beating effectively. Blood is not pumped completely out of them, so it may pool and clot. If a piece of a blood clot in the atria leaves the heart and becomes lodged in an artery in the brain, a stroke results.
Dr. Richard Page, cardiology chief at the University of Washington in Seattle and an American Heart Association spokesman, said: “Wow. At first blush, this is very encouraging,” and could help as many as two-thirds of those who have the heartbeat problem.”
