I thought I would profile the Yellow Bear Children’s Shop, started by Julie Walbrun, BSN, a former RN who also has an MBA, in her own words:

Ever since the mid 1990’s when I took business start up classes in my MBA program, I have had the itch to launch my own business.  I survived three failed attempts along the way because I didn’t control the business model, someone else did.  But I learned a lot.  Right after we had our child, I took a job with an online marketing company and that opened my eyes.  If someone else can make money on the Internet, why can’t I?  The money would come in handy to pay for college and someday I could quit my regular job and concentrate full time on my web store and become a PTA mom.  I started looking into what products would sell and just as importantly, what products do I have firsthand experience using and would feel comfortable representing.  That was easy—children’s products. YellowBearChildrensShop.com was born in May 2008.

The competition is fierce but I can do better.  I work every day in web marketing plus I am a parent, a great combination I think.  I hired a web designer and an SEO consultant because I don’t know everything.  It’s fun explaining to your web designer what a diaper cake is.  I will be attending a trade show in the fall so I can expand my product line.  My goal is not to sell every product imaginable but to carry the best in each category.  And by best, I don’t mean expensive.  If I wouldn’t pay the retail price for the product, Yellow Bear doesn’t carry it.  Who can afford a $90 organic cotton crib sheet?  Let’s try a $15 100% cotton sheet.

I wanted to carry all natural/organic /green products because our daughter has eczema and I believe unnatural products play a part. If my husband and I were going to be using vast quantities of lotions and skin cleansers on our daughter, we wanted to make sure chemicals and laundry products weren’t causing her problem.  I know other parents want the same so www.YellowBearChildrensShop.com carries all natural and organic items like lotion, shampoo, gift baskets, blankets and laundry soap.  More and more of my vendors are adding green products everyday so it’s becoming easier to source.

So where did the Yellow Bear idea originate?  Well, our daughter named her faithful companion Yellow Bear.  That was my inspiration.  Whenever she sees my marketing materials and the Yellow Bear logo, she gets a smile from ear to ear and says, “That’s Yellow Bear!”
