Study Drugs or Smart Drugs and Opiate Use Among Students

On reading about the rise of the so-called “study drugs” or “smart drugs” among students on NPR.org, I realized what my good friend who is a psychiatrist in a major university town told me about months back. These study drugs, such as prescription Adderall (often called Addy by students) and Ritalin, helps the students concentrate while studying, but often are addictive. While it is illegal, it is readily available on college campuses, and students using it could face long-term effects to their health and mental wellbeing. I guess coffee doesn’t do the trick these days!
My psychiatrist friend also pointed out that in the college town where he practices, there is also a rise in opiate deaths, and that is a silent epidemic in college towns, and he pointed out that more awareness needs to be done to save many young adults of college age.
