Genetic Testing and Designer Babies

The need for so-called “designer babies,” is not of much interest to those seeking genetic testing. There are some public perception that genetic research may lead to the ability and interest in some parents to choose to have their baby taller, more athletic, superior intelligence etc. I think the superior intelligence part already take place in a way, sperm bank donors with degrees from Ivy league colleges and other family traits are highly sought after by some women.

A new study conducted by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center indicate that genetic testing consumers are more interested in testing for life altering and threatening medical conditions including mental retardation, blindness, deafness, cancer, heart disease, dwarfism and shortened lifespan from death by 5 years of age. In other words, at least in the near term, interest in so-called designer babies is not there. Notice I said in the short term, because it takes only one celebrity to have many people jumping on the “designer baby” bandwagon.
