I wrote an earlier post called “Global Pinch Affecting Cosmetic Surgery,” and one of the comments was that maybe we should cross train a few of the cosmetic surgeons to be gastroenterologists. According to a study by The Lewin Group, we will need an additional 1,050 gastroenterologists by 2020, and there are currently 10,390 practicing gastroenterologists in the United States.

I would say that is relative small for our estimated population of 300 million, but the real shortage may come as result of the increase in the aging population and colon cancer screening and increase. My question now is that is it a viable and prudent use of cosmetic surgeons, knowing that the financial rewards for cross training to be a gastroenterologist is not there? I just thought I should throw that out there for some people to ponder.
