I guess Nebraska’s Safe Haven law was taken to the extreme. The Nebraska law was intended to protect newborn children, if a parent is overwhelmed, but now a man left nine of his children between the ages of 1 through 17 at Creighton University Medical in Omaha, Nebraska. The law states that any child under the age of 19 can be left at a hospital if they’re in immediate danger
The man won’t be prosecuted, at least not under the current version of the Safe Haven law. You would think that common sense dictates that it is for newborn children, but if a law is that broad, well it is broad. What can I say? Now Nebraska state legislators want to clarify the law.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, said: “I’m absolutely surprised. When this bill was being discussed in the legislature, we had the discussion that this was going to be about young children and when they were in immediate danger. Like the rest of the country, we wanted to be there to help. Unfortunately they wrote the language too broad. We now need to amend that to change that.”
