A team of British researchers from the University of Southampton and the University of Bristol, reported in the online edition of the British Medical Journal, that teaching Alexander technique, an alternative therapy involving learning better posture, can ease chronic back pain. Back pain causes more disability than any other condition in the United States.
Frederick M. Alexander, born in Tasmania, Australia in 1869, was a Shakespearean actor, who proposed that the entire neuromuscular system would benefit from balancing tension in the muscles. The technique developed by Alexander was able to help with patient’s coordination, breathing, posture and joint function which resulted in reducing stress and improvement to overall health.
According to the study, “after a year of treatment, patients receiving 24 Alexander technique lessons reported experiencing just three days of back pain, compared to 21 days for those given normal care by their doctor.”
