Sometimes, getting rid of the pain could feel so good, but some people take that further and keep using their prescription drugs after their ailment is gone. Recently drug overdose and abuse got prominent attention with the January death of 28-year-old Hollywood actor Heath Ledger after he took six different prescriptions. The death of Ledger, who plays the Joker in the new incredibly successful Batman film “The Dark Knight,” showed that the problem is growing.
Do you know that according to federal data, those in the 45-54 age group, overdose deaths caused by prescription drugs surpasses motor vehicle deaths as the nation’s No. 1 cause of accidental death? Teenagers have been known to try prescription dugs as stimulants, and even Klonopin, a muscle relaxant, for a psychiatric disorder, is now been abused.
Sarah Roisman, 17, who abused Klonopin since age 14, said: “My friends and I would take a bunch of different pills and break them up and put them all together and call it confetti. It could be any combination of anything. We could learn from it, and continue to take it.”
