The University of Central Florida (UCF) Medical School makes a first. The Orlando, Florida medical school is awarding all 40 entering students for the medical school’s fall 2009 class, scholarships worth $160,000 each — $20,000 for tuition and $20,000 for living expenses and fees per year. That is a good start, since the average debt of a medical school graduate last year was $139,517.
Dr. Darrell Kirch, chief executive of the Association of American Medical Colleges, said: “With rising debt levels a growing concern for medical education, we applaud innovative approaches, such as this scholarship program.”According to the association, no other U.S. medical school has provided full scholarships to an entire class.
