The University of Central Florida (UCF) Medical School makes a first. The Orlando, Florida medical school is awarding all 40 entering students for the medical school’s fall 2009 class, scholarships worth $160,000 each — $20,000 for tuition and $20,000 for living expenses and fees per year. That is a good start, since the average debt of a medical school graduate last year was $139,517.

Dr. Darrell Kirch, chief executive of the Association of American Medical Colleges, said: “With rising debt levels a growing concern for medical education, we applaud innovative approaches, such as this scholarship program.” According to the association, no other U.S. medical school has provided full scholarships to an entire class.
