Physicians examine role:

Disease prevention is essential in today’s health care system. The so called preventive medicine, often more talk than practice, since physicians feel they get more compensation when they treat an existing condition, than a future problem.

However, Ateev Mehrotra, MD, MPH, who examined the issue of preventive health exams and preventive gynecological exams in a study in the Sept. 24, 2007, Archives of Internal Medicine, said: “Some have argued that preventive exams are the only time that preventive care is happening, and our findings are contrary to that assumption.”

While it may seem that preventive care may happen at other times besides the yearly physicals or gynecological exams, preventive exams are not emphasized enough. Shifting more emphasis to preventive medicine could help alleviate our current health care crisis.
