New theory published in the July issue of Early Human Development:

A small study involving 31 babies who died of the mysterious killer known as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in Rhode Island, and involved studying the routine hearing-test results compared with healthy surviving babies, indicate that SIDS victims had a lower score across three different sound frequencies in the right ear.
Daniel Rubens of Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, the study leader, said: “Tiny hairs in the inner ear that play a role in hearing may also transmit information to the brain regarding carbon dioxide levels in the blood. ” Ruben thinks injury to these cells may disrupt normal breathing controls, predisposing infants to SIDS, and he concluded that a simple hearing test maybe all that is needed to determine babies at risk of SIDS.
