Mirena IUD

Wondering if any woman out there have used the Mirena IUD? I have used the ParaGard without hormone and found that there was a lot of bleeding associated with it. Mirena has progesterone in it which is supposed to completely stop the bleeding and be just as effective. I’m not crazy about hormones and contraception and wish there was an effective, non-hormonal form of birth control short of sterilization. I heard something interesting the other day at work. A nurse I was working with told me that the IUD can sometimes terminate a pregnancy. Supposedly you can actually conceive and the IUD can make the environment so unstable that a pregnancy cannot carry on. Of course nothing like this is written in the literature. Has anyone else heard this?

I have had the Mirena for 5 months and though, it should diminish considerably the menstrual bleeding it’s been proven to be a total failure in my case. Since I’ve got it I’ve had a period almost every 2 weeks or I am spotting almost everyday….the doctor tried some oral hormones to balance that after 10 days and all my cranky mood swinging I stopped them. I just visited him and he suggested a female sterilisation (I have 3 kids already) which is too radical for me, still I have to see him again in 2 weeks and decide to take out the Mirena (or not) and go for another contraceptive (was thinking on the women condon)…anyway…most women I’ve heard love the Mirena IUD and it was actually recommended by 3 different doctors to me…so, I guess I am just not having luck with it.
Best luck for you, anyway! Oh! it is the MOST effective contraceptive in the market after the vasectomy and female sterilization.

I have had the Mirena IUD for 2 years now and it has been great so far, except for one moral issue that I have recently started thinking about. I know that I am still ovulating every month and I believe that I have become pregnant, maybe more than one time and I believe the IUD has terminated the pregnancy. It tries to slow down the sperm from ever getting to the egg but if fertilization still occurs, it will not allow the embryo to implant itself. It thins the uterine walls and creates a hostile environment where the egg can not survive. The thought of this possibility really bothers me but there isn’t really any way to prove if it is happening this way. The only symptoms that I have had is being a week or two late on my period and then having a really bad period. So who knows?

Thanks for the responses. Most of what I’ve heard about the Mirena IUD is very positive. In most cases, it lightens up and almost stops monthly bleeding. I guess there is really no way to prove that the IUD terminates a fertilization but considering that fertilization almost always takes place in the fallopian tube, makes me wonder. Anyway, for alot of women it’s a great form of contraception.

I know this response is late in the blog, but for anyone who is looking information about the Mirena IUD, here is what I have to say:
I have had it implanted since September 2007 and it has been a never ending period/spotting time for me. I have considered tubal ligation since I have two kids and when I am pregnant, I am placed on bedrest due to high risk pregnancies. There have been a couple of times when I have experienced sharp pains on either of my breasts, but I didn’t think it was related to the IUD, but I have read that it is.
Good luck to anyone who is contemplating getting the Progesterone IUD.

I have had the mirena since March 2007. It has been a year and I have never stopped bleeding. I have had breakup bleeding since it was put in and have had severe headaches and terrible moodswings i was told this could be related to the Mirena. So after a year I am thinking about having it removed, it is a wonderful thing if it works for you.

I have had the Mirena since June of 2007, and haven’t had a period since July of 2007. Its been great!!!!!

AS OF MARCH 24, 2008 I HAD THE MIRENA INSERTED AND I AM STILL HAVING ALOT OF BLEEDING. I HAVE READ THAT IT CAN MAKE YOU BLEED FOR 3 TO 6 MONTHS. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF I AM BLEEDING TO MUCH OR IS THAT COMMON. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR SOME INPUT.

    THANKS SHANNON

I have been on Mirena since Sept. 2005 and did not bleed for years until recently-and now the blood is just constant. I am not sure what to think! I am going to the doctor next week.

I had Mirena since August ’07….and have had a period every since. Not until about 5 weeks ago, I started my period, and haven’t quit bleeding since….I have also noticed a lot of side effects the last few months. I seem to be on edge all the time…my kids or husband say or do something that annoys me, and I just snap. I hate being like this. My face has never broken out this bad in my life. Sometimes I wake up, and literally feel like I have ben run over by a truck. My entire body will ache like I worked out for hours the day before. At first I didn’t know if this could be Mirena, but I have done a lot of research, and I think it might be. My kidneys hurt a lot too. This little “wierd device” is messing with me bad. I really hope my bleeding will work itself out, because I don’t know what other form of birth control i would try. I have 2 kids, but I am only 23 and don’t want to cut off my options just yet. Hope you all are having better luck than me.

  11. sheryl | 26 April 2008, 11:32

I had the Mirena put in in Nov 2006. It has been absolutely terrific … only get a very light (1 day) period every 4 months or so. I had adenomyosis causing really heavy bleeding, plus I needed a birth control method.

I can’t say enough good about the thing, although putting it in was painful.

The only issue — and I can’t say for sure if it is true — is that I am having pregnancy symptoms at the moment. Never was able to feel the strings, and stopped checking. If there was a failure then I am 8 weeks pregnant (based on impregnation date – and I know because my fiance has been away ever since). I’ve had 4 pregnancies and 3 misses, so I am not inexperienced with this!

The only problem is that I will be FIFTY ONE in a couple of months and the idea of starting all over again is daunting! (My kids are 26, 21, 19 and 17!)

  12. TINA | 28 April 2008, 07:26

    Hi,
This is especially for Sherly since we are so in the same boat!
I had the mirena put in also in Nov.06 and it has been great, havent had any negative thing to say about it but recently i have experienced preganancy symptoms!
I am constantly tired and my breasts are so very painfull even, i cant even touch them myself.

My partner has also been away for exactly eight weeks so if i am i should be about eight weeks.

It is my first time though and i really didnt want a child now .I am almost thirty but i havent planned for a child therefore the mirena implant.

I am going to the doctor next week (terrified he might find me pregnant!) Will let you all know. Thanks for all the infos by the way.

  13. TINA | 29 April 2008, 10:51

    Hey guys,
Can anyone tell me if they have heard of conceiving with the mirena in place?
If anybody has experienced it or heard of it, please let me know, i am really worried i might be expecting although i have the mirena.

  14. CynMom | 08 May 2008, 07:27

I am also worried about being pregnant with Mirena IUD in place. I started a forum topic on the MyDocHub Mirena IUD Forum

  15. Sarah | 06 June 2008, 22:59

I had the mirena implanted in Nov 07 and never stopped spotting/bleeding for 8 months until i had it removed in Mar 08. I did not go without a pad in my underwear the entire time. Cramping and bad moods were included! My midwives raved about this device and yet I don’t think it’s so great. Sure I never got pregnant but I never had a chance to have sex to get pregnant!! I did also have second thoughts on the moral side of things. You can still concieve with this device, it simply discourages sperm passage and egg implantation. If you believe as I do that bith starts at conception, perhaps this is not exactly the most miraculous device I thought it was before I had it placed. Hmmmmmm….just some food for thought!!!!!!!

  16. Margie | 11 July 2008, 20:48

I’ve had Mirena for 18 months now. I have had some cramping but nothing worse than what I had before I had it inserted. As far as mirena being immoral, it contains the same hormones as most birth control pills, which also alter the lining of your uterus, so if this really bothers you that much, stick to barrier methods.

  17. Jolene | 22 July 2008, 18:20

I’ve had the Mirena put in after an abortion, b/c i didnt want the chance to getting pregnent again when i wasent ready. Ever since then ive gotten periods that lasted 10days to a month and with bad pains. Plus i’ve gain weight have bad mood swings and i’m think that i should remove it. I’ve heard lots of great things about it..but thats not the case for me. Any suggestions on another birth control that is as effective?

  18. Cheryl | 25 July 2008, 14:32

I have had the Mirena in since January and I didn’t have bleeding for a few months and now it won’t stop for the last 2 months I have a pad on everyday some good this expensive device is doing. Has anyone had the same problem? I am going back to OB next week for a check. If she tells me it’s not working I will have it removed I guess and try something else I already have 3 kids….

  19. Felicia | 06 August 2008, 20:03

I have had the mirena for a year now and I’ve weight but not that much and my mood swings are terrible I have 1 child & when I have it remove in 4 more years imma have 1 more child & that’s it I hate my mood swings & I still have a monthly period but it is light

  20. Brooke | 22 August 2008, 12:14

I got the IUD put in less then one month ago and I have not stopped bleeding yet. It was heavy at first and now it has slowed down a little. I am bleeding a lot of clumps…I never had cramps before and I cramp now. I like the IUD because I forget to take pills but I dont know if I want to bleed this much.

  21. Jenabq | 28 August 2008, 15:56

This is all great input but I do have a question.

Do any of you have the same conditions that I do and do you think you were helped by Mirena.

I am interested in getting the Mirena because I have been on BC (Yaz) for 22 years and am tired of the cost and the periods. I am 38 and have one child and he is the only child I want to have but I won’t consider a historectomy.

I am a little concerned about the reported side effects mentioned here but maybe my situation is different. I have low progesterone already and had to take it as a supplement when I was pregnant and so did my mother. I also developed endometriosis while pregnant and it is recommended that I regulate my period in some to keep it from coming back. I also have hoshimoto’s Disease (Low thyroid where my thyroid is slowly dying).

    Let me know,

    Jen

I have had Mirena for 6 months now and have spotted the whole time, although it has been very sporadic. It will come for like 2 weeks in a row, and then disappear for weeks. Recently the spotting has been VERY clotty and the blood has been darker. Just wondering if this is typical for anyone else?

I have a scheduled follow up next month but am curious if anyone else has experienced similar symptoms.

  24. Jessica | 06 September 2008, 17:46

I have had an IUD since right after I had my son, Nov 6, 2005. I haven’t had a period since I can remember after having the IUD implanted, I love it but my only problem with it is sometimes I can feel it poking into me and when it does it causes severe cramps which usually go away in a few minutes to a couple hours but never any bleeding. Well today almost 3 years later I woke up, went to the bathroom then went out everything was fine but when I got back I went to the bathroom again and had blood in my underwear. This is the first time in 3 years I have seen any blood come from my body, and then I came to think about it the last 1-2 days I have been feeling like I need to pee constantly. I am a little worried that maybe I am having a miscarriage? I haven’t seen any blood but a tiny bit on the toilet paper since but I still have cramps and feel like I need to move my bowels(I know tmi) but its Saturday and I know my GYN isn’t open and I don’t want to run to the ER over nothing, but I still feel worried because of the length of time I haven’t seen blood and all of a sudden I do. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

After reading all the feedback, I’m not getting this Mirena IUD, sounds too unstable and it does sound like alot of you are going through mood swings and probably eliminating embryos. I have extremely heavy regular periods, but I think I will just let nature take it’s course. The doctor has also recommended ablation…anybody out there have feedback on this? It’s the CRYOABLATION with the ball of ice.

  26. Kendra | 18 September 2008, 10:24

    Hi everybody,
I had the Mirena inserted July 1st, 2008. I had a son in May and I hadn’t had a period since his birth when the IUD was inserted. Immediately following insertion, I bled for the first 2 months without stopping and since then I have been spotting frequently. I am still not sure whether I have actually had a period since his birth or if it is just bleeding from the device because prior to my pregnancy, the blood from my periods was heavier and would become significantly darker towards the end, but since I had the IUD, the bleeding has been light and it never darkens. Religiously speaking, it is very important to me to know whether I am on my period or if it is just normal blood. I am traveling at the moment and am unable to talk to my OB about the problem, so if anyone knows whether this bleeding is the same kind of blood that comes from periods, I would appreciate the input.
Also, I am really disturbed by the idea of termination of pregnancies. If there are any professional opinions about this, I would really like to know.
    Thanks

  27. Heather | 18 September 2008, 20:27

I have had this IUD for Five years. I love it and I am planning on having a new one put in soon since it needs to be replaced every five yrs. I had it put in when my son was six weeks old. I did have a little sporadic spotting for the first few months but that would have been when I was due for my regular period. I have endometriosis and it has been a blessing in not having very painfull periods every month. For those of you concerned about it stopping implantation they don’t know exactly how it works if you read the material on the web site It can stop implantation or it may stop ovulation. A little tidbit to add is that most women in their liftime have been pregnant and did not know because the egg does not implant due to some type of problem usually with the egg.

Has anyone experienced autoimmune disorders after having the IUD put in? I always had bad allergies, even a deadly allergy to penicillin. I’ve read that allergic reactions are over/reaction by your immune system to foreign elements. I thought Mirena would be great a year after my second child was born. 3-4 weeks after I had the IUD inserted, I became sick with Stills Disease. Very rare, RA type disease. I was exhausted all the time, among a long list of other things and then one day woke up feeling like someone had taken a bat to my whole body. Needless to say my symptoms got worse, pretty much as bad as you can get for this type of disease. I stayed in the hospital for a month while they kept me on IV steriods. I was just reading about breast augmentation and the autoimmune problems from the silicone bags. Mirena I found is made from silicone too. I just wondered if maybe some women are more prone to over-reaction by their immune systems to foreign objects. BTW, the implant hurts when I orgasm. As if the non-existent libido and pain during sex wasn’t enough. The associated weight gain is annoying. I like not having a period and more children isn’t the best move for someone with a serious disease, but maybe not putting plastic objects with man-made hormones into my body is the key to a healthy, happy, normal life.

Hi! I’m overwhelmed by the vast spectrum of these comments…. I’m scheduled to get the Mirena next week. I am 7 weeks post partum and plan to be breast feeding for another 5 or 6 months and this was one of the few birth control methods you can take while feeding. My ‘ol buddy NuvaRing got the axe. I did specifically ask my doctor about fertilized eggs as I feel the same way as many of you. She said it didn’t cause abortions if that’s what I was concerned about… as for bleeding and cramping and weight gain I’ll just have to hope for the best, I’ve seen many women react differently to many types of birth control *sigh*

  31. Queale | 31 January 2009, 20:34

I had a mirena put in to stop the heavy monthly bleeding. I am 54. guess what..I have been bleeding ever since and have tried various pill hormones to also stop it. no luck.this has been going on for three months, i think that is enough. obviously, some of us are not suited to it. feb 2008.

  32. Chris | 04 March 2009, 21:33

I must say after having had the lastest Mirena inserted for the first time I was quite happy with the thought of not having to remember to take a pill..let me say I had a termination at the same time.. this was just over 3 weeks ago, since then the cramos have been spasmottic sometime barely there other time I have been doubled over in tear with my husband stressing that I need to go to hospital, when the cramps are this bad pain killers don’t even dull them even slightly.
The bleeding has been just as infrequent and usually shows up just after the cramping starts, I have a very high pain thresh hold and have always had strong cramps but this is rediculous! I only hope it settles down.

  33. Lindsey | 05 March 2009, 13:36

My gyno won’t prescribe the pill anymore because of my age and I smoke, I don’t have children so she suggested Mirena, but after reading these blogs, I think I might take my chances. Pregnancy sounds eaiser.

  34. C Brooks | 05 March 2009, 14:10

I am 28, no kids. I had Mirena put in 11/21/08…it’s now 3/5/09, 14 weeks ago. I had it put in for heavy/painful periods that have ruined 8 days of every month of my life since I was 11. I have been on every type of bc pill, monophasic, triphasic, continuous, progestin only, had constant bleeding, migraines, insomnia with all. As for my Mirena experiences, Insertion hurt like hell. I had heavy bleeding and horrible/debilitating cramps every day for the first month, moderate to light bleeding and moderate to severe cramps 24 days of the second month, 19 days of light bleeding for the third month. I am now 2 weeks into month four and the bleeding is heavy one day, very light the next – I’ll go all day with no bleeding then have a spot or two at night…or a spot or 2 in the morning, then nothing else that day. Once in a while a lot of blood will just pour out – then just stop for the rest of the day. I have been getting a lot of migraines too…My doctor wants me to give it more time, but I am not hopeful that it will get better – I was told to stick it out with all the pills I was on and it never got better. I have had a million tests done and they have never been able to find the cause of my heavy/painful periods…The next step is hysterectomy, I don’t want kids, but I don’t want major surgery either…I will keep Mirena a little longer, then it’s goodbye evil uterus for me!

  35. Shannon | 02 April 2009, 19:51

I love Mirena. I had it put in after my 2nd child was born in Jan 2004 and not had any problems at all! It’s been wonderful and I am about to have it removed and another inserted. I just need to know how effective it is right now, being a little older than 5 years?

  36. Shelly | 07 April 2009, 16:38

The biggest problem that I had was the cost!! My insurance didn’t cover the IUD or procedure and it was over $1100. I’m paranoid about it falling out since it costs so much to have it replaced. I’ve had it in for a month now, and the bleeding was hardly anything, and the pain went away within 24 hours of insertion. Every once in a while, I can feel a tiny cramp, but nothing like period cramps, and anything is better then labor!!

  37. Sabrina | 07 May 2009, 09:45

I have had the Mirena for 9 months, I have 4 kids and 2 are under age 2. My concern is i have alot of joint pain just like i did when i had the depo shot. I stopped the shot because of fear of osteoporosis. I am only 32. Has anyone else experienced bad pain in the joints at night, needing some pain pills to cope. Right now its better than being pregnant, but i want to enjoy my later years in life without wondering did my birth control have something to do with my bad bones in the future. I’ve tried a majority of birth control, & i dont want to be pregnant. I’ve never stopped having my period, I dont think i would want to. IT doesnt seem healthy for the body not to be able to get rid of old blood, where does the period disappear to ? I believe we shouldnt not want our period, its what makes us women, reproductive, sensitive to our families needs, lets us know we can still give life if we wanted to.

  38. Angelica | 26 July 2009, 23:40

C Brooks. Please contact me asap. My mother has had the mirena IUD for 8 years. Which was inserted months after the birth of my brother. During this time she has developed stills disease RA and fibromyalgia. I also have inserted the Mirena IUD 2 months ago 6 weeks after the birth of my son. Since then I have horrible joint aches. Worsens with the cold. Cramps, mood swings, weight gain, painful intercourse, spotting for weeks on end, migraines. The list goes on. I’m getting it removed asap. I would like to further investigate the possible link of her disease and Mirena. Clearly the risks outweigh the benefit in the case of Mirena. Please contact me amerino28@gmail.com

CLAIRE: You blogged Dec 10, 2008. I too, have been diagnosed with Stills Disease. Seven years ago I had my first Mirena inserted after the birth of my fourth child. About a few months later I was in the hospital feeling like a Mack truck ran me over. Before the diagnosis, I started to experience pain in my back, joint pain, neck pain, all over body aches. Now, I too havae alot of meds to take and on disability. I regularly attend physical therapy twice a week. All of this info is news to me brought to my attention by my 23 year old daughter Angelica. She also just had the IUD Mirena inserted . She is also starting to experince the side effects. I am sorry to say that I thought it would be a good BC for her. Only because of the fact that it lasts for about 5 yrs, no daily pill to take in case you forget. I just had it reinserted 4 months ago. I am starting again to experince all the same side effects, bleeding, weight gain, poking (Which later was cut shorter by my OB) Please, Please, Please, contact me anytime. My cell number is 928-965-7692. Michele Merino of Az.

I, too, had the mirena inserted this summer. I had six weeks of non-stop bleeding, then a break, now I’ve had it 3 months, and I’ve been bleeding for 3 weeks. Pretty aggravating! Everyone I had talked to had had a complete cessation of periods, but that has not been the case with me. Maybe I have had a little weight gain, not much. Not noticing headaches or mood swings, but I really don’t like this constant bleeding. Not sure whether I’ll get it removed yet or not. My insurance didn’t pay anything either.

  41. Trish | 21 January 2010, 13:33

I’ve had my Mirena for 3 1/2 yrs. I’m torn with the side effects-like most of you I had the crazy bleeding for about the first 6 months. I still really don’t have regular period intervals, but when I do have a cycle they are panty-liner light. They still last about 5 days. Sometimes I have pain with deep penetration-and sometimes bleeding after. So working at an OB/Gyn, I was disappointed that my periods didn’t go away. Also, my skin is TERRIBLE! I’ve tried Proactive and Tetracycline with no improvement. I’ve never had a cyst before, and I had my first one a couple of months ago. My aunt had her Mirena removed about a year after having it because her cysts were so bad-I work with a few women that claim that they also get cysts. I think I’m going to get mine removed because I’m done with my skin issues, and I’m going to resume NuvaRing with continuous cycles. Mirena is still a good option, I think, but it’s not for everyone. I will caution you to give it 6 months if you’ve just got it inserted, to see what life will actually be like once you’ve become aclimated to the devise. We don’t have a lot of turn over as far as patients getting them removed due to intollerance, but there are a few. We have had a couple of patients pregnant with them, but very few. The Mirena was removed through laparoscope and the pregnancy went on with no issues-and one particular lady is pregnant again! So, obviously nothing detrimental happened there. Again, just consider your options and give it time to work!

  42. dee dee | 06 March 2010, 01:35

I ve had it for one month. Thefirst day I got it, I had bad cramps almost like labor cramps but it only lasted for a couple of hours. My only problem now is one month later Ihad my period and its still here and its going on day 9.its light but I just didn’t think it would last this long…….I love it haven’t had any other problems and I would suggest it to everyone.

  43. Jessica | 17 August 2010, 16:56

I had the Mirena put in August 2008. No children yet. The first 3-4 weeks I had my normal, painful period. After that and to this day I RARELY have spotting. I think the side affects I notice the most are slight mood swings and a bit more acne than before, but it is manageable. I am hoping that my body will kick back into it’s normal schedule when my husband and I decide to try to have a child and I have it removed. But, I can’t complain about the Mirena, my insurance covered it and it’s been easy! (no more tampons or pads!) Insertion was a nightmare, but they say if you haven’t had children it’s more painful. Note to those going in: take some pain pills along with you. Have any of the women who’ve have the continuous bleeding had it removed? I wouldn’t last longer than a month with that! I think everyone’s body reacts to it differently, so there’s no right or wrong answer.

I loved, I have won weight but I dont have any periods

    Mirena feedback,

I just had my mirena put in at the beiging of the month. I did tons of research on the drug and from what I gathered the mirena works two ways. First the actual device blocks your partners lil swimmers from there desired destination and second the levongestrel and progestrin create a film inside that prevent them from being able to swim any further. I switched from the nuva ring to mirena because it was cheaper and from what i’ve heard more successful.

The changes I have noticed in my body are breast enlargement (my partner is happy about that), acne, and being emotional… However, this is all taking place during my normal pms week of the month. My sex drive is normal, and I actually have more energy now than when I was on the ring.
So far I can’t say I anything too bad about it.

hi, I’m 17 and look at getting the Mirena. all the women in my family have gotten pregnant at 17-19yrs old on both the pill and using condoms. I’m still a virgin but my boyfriend and I have been serious for two years now and I want to go to the next level with him. thing is I’m absolutely terrified to become like my mother. obviously I’m talkin to her about this and I’ve done research that says the mirena is the best out there. speaking of the “abortion” aspect and the fact that everyone’s bleeding a lot we are planning on using a condom also- its his money so I’m not wasting any money there.
my question is is the Mirena worth my money? being as many of you had bad side affects. I’m young, my hormone levels r even, I’ve had a steady general period for over six years now, and I don’t have any medical problems. I’ve heard many good things and many bad things!
    help? comments please?
    thank you so much :)

I have had the Mirena for over 10 years. I have had a positive ANA screen which suggests autoimmune disorder. I have been trying to figure out what things contributed to it and the IUD just came to mind. I was negative for lupus, arthritis but so far the blood work is pointing to connective tissue disease.
Any one else have this link?

Actually I was just told how mirena works…I. have had mirena for only 5months…I have had issues since the first day of insertion. The mirena is meant to dry the uteran walls so that the fertilized egg cannot attach. Long story short I took a urine preg test at the doctors before insert, it was negative. Three days later I have horrible cramping bleeding and nausea…I had a misscarriage. The doctor blew it off as if it wernt and that my body was just trying to get used to it….over the next five months there have only been about two weeks that I was not bleeding!!! So I’m having it taken out..
